Concussion Care at Peak Physical Therapy and Sports Medicine

A concussion can happen in an instant. You might be in the middle of a game, walking into class, or simply going about your day when a bump, fall, or collision changes everything. Suddenly, you may feel dizzy, disoriented, or just not like yourself. This is the reality for millions of people each year who experience a concussion—a type of brain injury caused by the brain moving back and forth inside the skull after a hit to the head or body.

How a Concussion Affects Daily Life

Even though concussions are common, their impact is very real. Symptoms can include:

  • Headaches or pressure in the head
  • Dizziness or balance problems
  • Trouble concentrating or remembering things
  • Sensitivity to light or sound
  • Changes in mood, sleep, or energy levels

These symptoms can disrupt school, work, sports, and even relationships. That’s why proper care is so important—not just for short-term recovery, but for your long-term brain health. If you experience a concussion, it is important to see a concussion-trained professional here at Peak Physical Therapy within the first 7-10 days. If you had a concussion that is more that 7-10 days old you can still greatly benefit from PT intervention and concussion management.

Our Specialized Concussion Program

At Peak Physical Therapy and Sports Medicine, we use the Complete Concussion Management (CCMI) system, a research-driven program trusted around the world. This systemensures that every part of recovery is addressed—not just one symptom.

Our CCMI-certified physical therapist leads your care and works with other specialists such as physicians, optometrists, naturopathicdoctors, licensed counselors and neurologists when needed. This team-based approach helps us create a personalized plan to guide you safely back to your daily activities, whether that means returning to school, work, or sports.

Baseline Testing: Preparing Before an Injury

One unique feature of CCMI is baseline testing. This is done before a concussion happens and provides a snapshot of how your brain and body function under normal conditions.

  • We measure things like memory, reaction time, balance, strength, and vision.
  • If a concussion occurs later, these results serve as a comparison point, helping us track your progress and recovery more accurately
  • We are able to provide basic baseline testing to school teams and athletic clubs, throughour free CCMI concussion app.

What to Expect During Concussion Treatment

If you come to us after a concussion, here’s what you can expect:

  • Comprehensive Evaluation – We’ll assess your balance, gait, strength, eye movements, reaction time, vestibularand cognitive function as well as perform special tests to assess and understand how the injury has affected you.
  • Personalized Treatment Plan – Based on your evaluation, we’ll design a program tailored to your needs. This may include balance training, exercises for vision, gradual return-to-activity programs, and strategies to manage symptoms.
  • Collaborative Care – When necessary, we’ll coordinate with your doctor and other healthcare professionals to ensure you receive complete care.
  • Guided Recovery – We’ll monitor your progress and adjust your plan as you heal, helping you return to school, work, or sports safely and confidently.
