What Is Dry Needling?

Dry needling is a physical therapy technique that involves inserting thin, sterile needles into trigger points–tight knots in the tissue that wraps around your muscles. This process helps loosen trigger points, reduce pain, and improve blood flow.

While dry needling may sound similar to acupuncture, they’re actually two different techniques. Acupuncture is based on traditional Chinese medicine and follows energy pathways in the body. Dry needling is grounded in modern anatomy and neuroscience, targeting specific muscles and tissues to relieve pain and improve function.

Conditions That Respond Well to Dry Needling

We often suggest dry needling for people dealing with:

  • Back and neck pain, including muscle knots or tension that restricts movement
  • Shoulder pain, including rotator cuff issues and frozen shoulder
  • Headaches and migraines, which are often linked to tight muscles in the neck and shoulders
  • Tennis elbow and golfer’s elbow, which develop due to tendon and muscle irritation in the arm
  • Hip and knee pain caused by overuse, arthritis, or muscle imbalance
  • Sports injuries, including lingering soreness or tightness after activity
  • Post-surgical stiffness

Benefits of Dry Needling at Peak Physical Therapy and Sports Medicine

Dry needling offers several great benefits when used as part of a physical therapy treatment program. It can:

  • Reduce muscle pain and soreness
  • Improve mobility and range of motion
  • Facilitate recovery from injuries
  • Lower nerve sensitivity and pain signals
  • Enhance blood circulation in treated areas
  • Support other physical therapy treatments for faster progress

One of the best benefits of dry needling is that we can adapt it to each patient’s needs. Some may require deep trigger point stimulation, while others benefit from lighter, more surface-level application. Your therapist will guide you through the process and explain what to expect.
