TMJ Treatment

Relief for Jaw Pain and Stiffness in Kyle, Texas

Pain, stiffness, and other symptoms in your jaw can affect your ability to eat, talk, and even rest comfortably. This discomfort is known as temporomandibular joint (TMJ) dysfunction and can dramatically impact your quality of life. Fortunately, the team at Peak Physical Therapy and Sports Medicine offers several strategies to address TMJ pain directly, working to restore normal function and reduce pain.

What Is TMJ Dysfunction?

The temporomandibular joint connects your jaw to your skull. It acts like a sliding hinge, allowing you to chew, speak, and yawn. TMJ dysfunction occurs when this joint or the surrounding muscles stop working smoothly.

Several factors can contribute to problems with the jaw joint, including teeth grinding, injury, postural issues, and tight or overworked muscles. These causes often overlap, and each patient may have a different combination leading to their pain. Our team can help you better understand your specific needs.

Symptoms Of TMJ Dysfunction

  • Jaw pain or tenderness
  • Clicking, popping, or grinding sounds in the joint
  • Difficulty opening or closing the mouth
  • Stiffness or tightness in the jaw or neck muscles
  • Headaches, often around the temples
  • Ear pain or ringing not linked to infection
  • Difficulty chewing certain foods

How Peak Physical Therapy and Sports Medicine Helps Address TMJ Dysfunction

Our physical therapists will work with you to create a customized treatment program focused on restoring proper movement, reducing pain, and addressing muscle imbalances. Every plan we create is tailored to your specific needs and pulls from a range of treatment techniques, including:

  • Manual therapy techniques to relax tight jaw and neck muscles
  • Joint mobilization to improve the movement of the jaw joint itself
  • Modalities such as ultrasound, heat, or electrical stimulation to reduce muscle spasm and facilitate healing
  • Targeted stretches and strengthening drills to support balance in the jaw, neck, and shoulders
  • Posture training to enhance head and neck alignment and reduce stress on the TMJ
  • Stress management strategies to limit teeth grinding and clenching

Benefits of TMJ Treatment at Peak Physical Therapy and Sports Medicine

Patients who complete therapy for TMJ dysfunction at Peak Physical Therapy and Sports Medicine often experience:

  • Less jaw pain and stiffness
  • Improved ability to chew and speak without discomfort
  • Fewer headaches related to muscle tension
  • Greater awareness of habits that strain the jaw
  • Lasting relief with reduced recurrence of symptoms
